Who is iParadigms, and what is Turnitin®? iParadigms, LLC is a company committed to developing standard-setting, internet-based tools that protect intellectual property, promote academic and corporate integrity, and improve overall client productivity. Turnitin is the world's premier plagiarism-prevention and collaborative learning technology software, and it is the most widely recognised and trusted resource for helping prevent Internet and student-to-student plagiarism. Turnitin helps educators and students take full advantage of the Internet's educational potential. Thousands of institutions in over eighty countries have found that an effective plagiarism detection service, when combined with plagiarism education, serves as an enormously effective deterrent to digital plagiarism by addressing the growing problem of intellectual property theft and dishonesty. Turnitin's products promote originality in student work, improve student writing and research skills, encourage collaborative learning, and save valuable instructor time. The seemingly 'public' nature of online content blurs the distinction between publicly and privately owned information. Electronic resources, by nature easily reproducible, are not perceived as "intellectual property" in the same way that their material counterparts are. Just as peer-to-peer file sharing programs have made it easy to trade copyrighted music files, which most people would never think to steal in physical form, the Internet makes plagiarism easy for students and writers who might have thought twice about copying from a book or published article. The purpose of Turnitin is to help put a stop to digital plagiarism. This means that papers – • will never again be re-circulated or recycled every year • will not be copied from one class and used for a different class • from one university will not find their way to another university course • acquired from the Internet will never be used to fulfill a course requirement. We aim to achieve these results by offering educators the most advanced tools for plagiarism detection available anywhere. Now in its eighth year of development, our technology – what we call Document Source Analysis – uses a set of powerful algorithms to create a digital fingerprint of any text document. Two packages are offered with the Plagiarism Prevention system – • the Grading Package (GradeMark and GradeBook), and • the Peer Review module. To find out more about Turnitin, click here. Turnitin offers a plagiarism prevention system that not only makes it easy to identify students who do plagiarise, but more importantly, also acts as a powerful deterrent to prevent plagiarism before it starts.
Modules currently
available in the Turnitin
system ● Plagiarism Prevention - the plagiarism detection module checks essays and produces the Originality Report. The information contained in the report lets users determine for themselves the extent to which any given work is plagiarised or original. Submitted papers are compared not only against the entire Internet (including the archived internet), but also against our exclusive database of previously-submitted student papers. Also, we search millions of published works and tens of thousands of electronic books. Subscribers receive reports for every submitted assignment at their own Turnitin "report inbox", within seconds. ● Peer Review allows instructors to create customizable, flexible peer-review assignments that students use as a framework to read, evaluate, and learn from each other. ● GradeMark allows instructors to place customized comments directly on a student's paper in a unique, paperless environment. ● GradeBook allows instructors to customize grading scales, enter grades directly, export to Excel or .csv, and manage assignments easily online. identifies any matches uncovered between submitted papers and source material. It is detailed in an intuitive and unambiguous format, allowing educators to spend time addressing plagiarism's causes rather than searching for it.Turnitin also offers the Turnitin PowerLink for WebCT users and also provides integration with the Blackboard Learning system. Additional links are available to other learning management systems.
